Nurul damper on Anwar’s hopes

PETALING JAYA: Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim may be gunning for a quick return of the Pakatan Harapan coalition to Putrajaya, but his daughter has poured cold water on any such dreams.

Nurul Izzah Anwar says it will take at least 10 years and two more general elections before Pakatan can hope to get a chance again.

Nurul Izzah, who is among the leaders of the “Ayuh Malaysia” movement to draw the support of fence-sitters to Pakatan for the 15th general election, doesn’t think support will return soon.

“I think it will not be easy for Pakatan to win the coming election. We must be prepared to lose two general elections before seeing a positive impact and acceptance by the rakyat.

“I am being realistic. We need time to show people we are different, and as a voter myself I was traumatised by what took place under the Pakatan-led government for 22 months,” the Permatang Pauh MP told Sinar Harian in an interview on Wednesday.

If her prediction is accurate, her father’s hopes of ever becoming prime minister are dashed.

Anwar is already 75 while Nurul Izzah is 41.

Nurul Izzah predicted that Pakatan would lose parliamentary and state seats in GE15.

The former PKR vice-president said that, because of this, the coalition must be an opposition with dignity that was able to offer something different.

Elaborating, she said that among the problems she saw in the two years when Pakatan was in power from 2018 were the coalition’s policies and failure to fulfil its election manifesto promises.

However, she also noted that Umno and Barisan Nasional should not be overconfident despite their recent landslide victories in the Johor and Melaka state elections.

She believed the key was to woo fence-sitters who did not turn up to vote during those state elections.

The Johor polls in March saw a voter turnout of 54.92% while last November’s Melaka election had a turnout of 65.85%.

“When all economic sectors are open, surely voters will turn out in droves,” she noted.

Her “Ayuh Malaysia” movement may still swing some votes the Opposition way.
