The Angiolini Inquiry's revelations this week have been shocking. How could Wayne Couzens, with a history marred by alleged sexual offences, have ever been allowed to wear the Met's badge?
It's a damning indictment of a system that has failed and desperately needs reform.

Couzens, a man whose past was littered with serious allegations — including an alleged sexual assault of a child, reports of an attempted kidnapping at knifepoint and multiple cases of indecent exposure — that should have been investigated by the authorities, not have him welcomed into the ranks of our police.
He would soon exploit his status as a police officer to kidnap and murder Sarah Everard.

The inquiry has rightfully called for sweeping reforms in police vetting to keep people like this out of the force – and I will implement these as Mayor. It is a vital first step in rebuilding trust.

But this has also prompted a long overdue conversation about women's safety.
It is nothing short of a disgrace that women in London walk our streets feeling unsafe, looking over their shoulders, fearing not just the criminals lurking in the dark but doubting the very people supposed to protect them.
And for too long, we’ve been expected to view this as normal. The Met Police remains in special measures, failing to meet the minimum standards expected of it.
This failure is a direct consequence of Sadiq Khan's dereliction of duty.
His leadership — or the lack of it — has left our police underfunded, undirected, and unable to fulfil their fundamental duty to keep us safe.
We now have a capital where women's safety is compromised, where the police force appears to be in disarray, and where criminals feel emboldened.

Enough is enough. I will not stand idly by while this happens. I will listen to women across our city who are telling me that they do not feel safe.
I will invest £200 million to overhaul the Met Police, to equip our police with the resources, training, and leadership they desperately need.
I will examine how best to implement the Angiolini Inquiry's recommendations, ensuring we have a vetting process that is rigorous, transparent, and worthy of the public's trust.
But our commitment must go beyond restructuring and funding. We will ensure that women's safety is not just a priority but the cornerstone of our policing strategy.
I have heard stories of women being fobbed off by the police when trying to report crimes like drink spiking or stalking. Under my leadership, these crimes will be pursued with the full force of the law, and a clear, comprehensive women's safety strategy will be put into action.
More than half of all Londoners are women, and yet our voices continue to be ignored.

But I am listening, and I will restore London to a place where every resident, especially women, can walk the streets without fear.
This needs to be a turning point for our city. London must become a city where our safety is prioritised, where we can trust our police and where justice prevails. I am determined to make this happen.
