Flight KLM677 made a sharp u-turn shortly after flying over Northern Ireland before turning back to Prestwick.

The flight took off around 11.30am from Amsterdam and was two hours into the journey when it had to make a sudden landing.

KLM said the emergency diversion came after a "technical defect".

Smoke had filled the cabin from an oven in the plane's middle galley.

The oven has now been removed from the KLM flight, but it's not yet known if the plane is continuing its journey to Canada.

A KLM spokesman said: "Flight KL 677, which left Amsterdam for Calgary at the beginning of the afternoon, landed as a precaution at Prestwick International Airport in Glasgow due to a technical defect. Passengers and crew were not in danger.

"The problem has now been resolved, but it is not yet clear when the plane can continue its journey to Canada."

Sun Online has contacted Prestwick Airport and the Civil Aviation Authority for comment.
