GEORGE TOWN: The drug suspect who escaped from Bayan Baru centralised lockup on Tuesday (April 26) has been rearrested.
Penang police chief Comm Datuk Mohd Shuhaily Mohd Zain said the suspect was nabbed around 6pm at a chalet near Batu Kurau Perak on Thursday (April 28).
"The suspect has been remanded for four days until May 2 at George Town police headquarters to facilitate the investigation," he said during a press conference at state police headquarters.
Comm Mohd Shuhaily said the suspect has also been sent to Penang Hospital to treat his allergies before being sent to the lockup to serve his remand order.
The suspect was held at Bayan Baru integrated lockup after being detained on April 20 before he escaped from the lockup on April 26.
Of the six police personnel who were remanded following the escape, Comm Mohd Shuhaily said the investigation points to an element of negligence that existed during the incident.
He said once the investigation paper was completed, suitable action would be recommended to the state deputy public prosecutor's office.
Comm Mohd Shuhaily praised his men for the job well done in rearresting the suspect.
He also thanked the members of the media for highlighting the case that led to the successful operation.
The case is being investigated under Section 223 of the Penal Code for negligence by a public servant in allowing the escape of a person under custody and Section 224 of the Penal Code for escaping from custody.
