PETALING JAYA: Transport Minister Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong will represent Malaysia and deliver a speech at the second United Nations Global Sustainable Transport Conference on Friday (Oct 15).

“I'll be representing Malaysia via video conference from London to deliver the minister's statement during tomorrow's (Friday) Ministers’ Forum: Sustainable Transport, Poverty Eradication and Economic Recovery,” he said on Facebook on Thursday night (Oct 14).

The virtual UN conference in Beijing began on Thursday and will end on Saturday (Oct 16).

Dr Wee said the conference is a follow-up to the first Global Sustainable Transport Conference in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan in 2016.

“This forum explores opportunities, challenges and solutions towards achieving sustainable transport worldwide.

"The knowledge shared here should indicate a way forward for sustainable transport to help achieve the objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate change,” he said.

Dr Wee said the keynote address was delivered by China’s president Xi Jinping and the opening statement by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

The conference is chaired by China's Transport Minister Li Xiaopeng.

Dr Wee said the speakers include Russian President Vladimir Putin.
