Today, the Princess of Wales performs an honourable role as one of the Royal Family’s most popular senior royals, but before she married into the Firm, the late monarch supposedly had a few concerns about Kate’s jet-set lifestyle.

Before they were married, her grandson’s girlfriend spent most of her 20s in the media spotlight as people grew interested in the future royal. During this time, Kate Middleton enjoyed swish holidays as part of a luxurious lifestyle.

She was often spotted holidaying on the Caribbean island of Mustique with her family, or enjoying romantic skiing trips with Prince William.

At the time, this supposedly concerned Queen Elizabeth II, who was unsure about her future granddaughter-in-law’s lifestyle.

Royal Expert, Katie Nicholl says Kate was dubbed 'Queen of Mustique' by press (Image: Getty Images)

According to the Mirror, royal expert, Katie Nicholl, wrote in her 2010 book titled ‘William and Harry’: “If she was not with William at Balmoral then the couple were skiing or holidaying in Mustique. Kate was there so often the press dubbed her ‘Queen of Mustique’, a title that had previously belonged to Princess Margaret.”

Because during this period, Britain was suffering from a recession, such “frivolous displays of wealth” were unpalatable to the Queen.

Ms Nicholl added: “While the rest of the world speculated that an engagement was on the horizon for William and Kate, the Queen believed an announcement should be postponed until Kate was settled in a career.”

A source in the book was quoted to say Kate at the time, needed a “proper job” if she were to be William’s consort.

The source added: “Swanning from one five-star holiday resort to another is not the prerequisite for a young woman possibly destined to be Queen.”

Princess Kate was thought to be “stung” by the Queen’s words, according to the royal expert. Over the years, Princess Kate has even represented Queen Elizabeth and the King at prestigious events.

As a polished, front-line royal, she most notably represented the family at the Wimbledon tennis championships as patron of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

Princess Kate is also forging a path of her own with projects that really matter to her such as The Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood, founded in 2021.
