During a discussion on the ITV political editors show, the former Scottish Conservative leader laid out a defence of the Government's response to the gas crisis amid soaring prices and providers going bust before Mr Peston interjected to share his own feelings on the issue.

Mr Peston said: “What is now happening as a result of that is that all our bills are going up actually to compensate those customers who some may say should perhaps be punished for taking risks other customers did not take!"

To which Ms Davidsonr replied: "You can't hammer the Government for the cost of living on one hand...

"But then say they are doing the wrong thing on this!"

Mr Peston interjected: "Well it is a question whether it is sustainable or not Ruth!"

But a furious Ms Davidson slapped down Mr Peston scolding him for interrupting shouting: "If I could just finish!"

A surprised Mr Peston quickly replied "yes of course" as he was put back in his place for interrupting.

Ms Davidson continued her argument outlining how Labour have failed to "even put up a spokesperson" for any breakfast shows as she turned the table's on Labour as she sought to find out how they would react.

She said: "Labour is saying absolutely nothing about it... they are so frightened about being asked about the leadership election that they don't want to talk about the thing that really matters!"

The comments come as Prime Minister Boris Johnson dismissed concerns over the gas crisis as he told GB News on Monday how the shortages are a “symptom” of the pandemic and how surging demand for gas has led to the energy chaos.

He suggested as a result Britons should “pick their benefits” this winter as he gave examples of not all putting the kettle on “after the Cup final”.

The gas market is crucial to the UK's energy supply because of its role in heating, industry and power generation.

More than 22 million households are connected to the gas grid, the UK Government says.

It comes as in 2020, 38 percent of the country's gas demand was used for domestic heating, 29 percent for electricity generation.

While 11 percent is ploughed into industrial and commercial use which is where concerns over food shortages are simmering.
