Neama Rahmani on drug cartels' human trafficking

       El Chapo's son, Ovidio Guzman Lopez, has been extradicted to the United States from Mexico for allegedly taking his father's place at the head of a fearsome Mexican drug cartel.

       CNN is reporting that the younger Guzman was brought to the United States under the directive of the Justice Department, helmed by Merrick Garland.

       Guzman's extradition was “the result of United States and Mexico law enforcement cooperation,” Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a statement that referred to Guzman as a “leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.”

       “This action is the most recent step in the Justice Department’s effort to attack every aspect of the cartel’s operations,” he said, per the outlet.

       Guzman flew into Chicago from Mexico, according to a representative for the Justice Department.

       El Chapo's son is expected to be arraigned on Monday (September 18).

       Guzman was first arrested after a brave operation made by the United States military personnel, but the operation wasn't one without bloodshed.

       Nearly 30 people died — including 10 military personnel — trying to bring the younger Guzman into custody, but fortunately, no civilian casualties were reported at the time of the extraction.

       Guzman's extradition comes hot on the heels of the release of El Chapo's wife, Emma Coronel Aispuro, from prison after she completed a two year sentence for trafficking and money laundering charges.

       According to the charges against Guzman, he and another brother inherited his father's vast, though illegally acquired, estate, and "began investing large amounts of the cash into the purchasing of marijuana in Mexico and cocaine in Colombia," while also keeping their hands in the methamphetamine game.

       “The fight against the cartels has involved incredible courage by United States law enforcement and Mexican law enforcement and military service members, many of whom have given their lives in the pursuit of justice,” Garland said in a statement, per the outlet.

       “I am grateful to them and to the department’s prosecutors for their work and their sacrifice. I am also grateful to our Mexican government counterparts for this extradition. The Justice Department will continue to hold accountable those responsible for fueling the opioid epidemic that has devastated too many communities across the country.”
