Boy, 14, to stand trial charged with murder of schoolgirl Ava White, 12, killed at Christmas lights switch-on

       A TEEN boy accused of murdering a 12-year-old girl stabbed to death at a Christmas light switch on is due to stand trial next year.

       Ava White suffered "catastrophic injuries" after being assaulted in Liverpool city centre last week.

       A 14-year-old boy, who legally can't be named, appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today charged with murder.

       The teen is also facing a charge of possession of a bladed article.

       He spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address during the brief hearing.

       No pleas were entered but a provisional trial date of May 16 next year was set.

       A plea and trial preparation hearing will be held on February 18.

       No application for bail was made and the boy was remanded in secure accomodation.

       Three other boys, aged 13, 14 and 15, arrested on suspicion of murder have been conditionally bailed.

       Emergency crews rushed to the city centre on Thursday night as families gathered to watch the Christmas lights being switched on.

       Paramedics discovered Ava collapsed on the ground as a member of the public desperately tried to save her life.

       She was rushed to hospital but sadly couldn't be saved and died shortly after.

       Tributes flooded in for Ava with devastated friends and family laying bouquets in the street following the horror.

       One friend said: "She was just a bubbly character, so loving and caring.

       "She came out with her friends to enjoy herself and I think it's just wrong that this has happened."

       Ava's headteacher at Notre Dame Catholic College, Peter Duffy, said she youngster was "much-loved, valued and unique".

       "She was an incredibly popular girl with a fantastic group of friends," he said.

       "Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to Ava's family and friends and all those affected by this utterly tragic event.

       "My staff are working with students to provide all the support they need at this traumatic time."
