A three-alarm fire tore through a commercial building in Evanston Sunday night, displacing all of its residents, officials said.

At around 8:30 p.m., firefighters responded to reports of the blaze at 1402 Greenleaf St., according to a news release. Eleven fire apartments assisted with the operation.

“Despite a well-coordinated, aggressive interior attack, fire operations quickly turned defensive as fire ravaged the structure, and conditions began to deteriorate rapidly,” the release said.

Crews used seven fire lines and three master streams to contain the blaze, officials said. The fire was brought under control at around 1 a.m. Monday.

The building was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The structure sustained “extensive smoke and fire damage,” displacing all residents, according to the release.

Parts of Greenleaf Street and Ashland, Wesley and Asbury Avenues remained closed Monday morning for the staging of fire apparatus, officials said.
