TOKYO -- The Tokyo Metropolitan Government reported 570 more coronavirus infections in Japan's capital on June 24.
The new cases came after the Japanese capital recorded 619 infections on June 23. Tokyo is under COVID-19 quasi-emergency measures to prevent the spread of infections.
In the first week of June, Tokyo recorded an average of 422.9 new infections per day, before the figure declined to 380.4 in the second week, and rose slightly to 391.9 in the third. The figures were down from the daily average of 705.8 in May. Tokyo saw a monthly high of 39,664 new virus cases in January -- an average of 1,279.5 infections per day, and the highest single-month total since the pandemic began in spring 2020.
By June 23, a total of 2,213 people had died of COVID-19 in Tokyo.
To date, Tokyo has recorded 170,945 infections, the most of any of Japan's 47 prefectures. As of June 23, there were 1,301 COVID-19 patients in hospital, 44 with severe symptoms.
