PUTRAJAYA: Malaysia’s daily Covid-19 figures showed little signs of slowing down, with its latest numbers remaining above the 5,000 mark.
In yesterday’s Covid-19 press update, Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah confirmed 5,812 more cases.
“These involved 5,780 local transmissions and 32 imported infections,” said the Health director-general.
This is the third consecutive day that cases have remained above 5,000.
Prior to that, the country recorded 4,611 cases on June 21 and 4,743 on June 22.
Malaysia has been under a nationwide lockdown since June 1.
The government previously announced that the country needed to record 4,000 daily cases for seven days before the lockdown could be relaxed.
Selangor remained the state with the highest number of new cases, with 2,187 infections recorded.
Of the state’s total, 1,048 were from contact tracing, while 769 were sporadic infections.
Another 349 were linked to clusters while 21 were imported infections.
Dr Noor Hisham also announced that there were 82 new deaths, taking the country’s death toll to 4,803.
More than half of the deaths were in the Klang Valley alone – Selangor recording 31 deaths and Kuala Lumpur with 18 cases.
The deceased involved 71 Malaysians and 11 foreigners.
The youngest casualty is a 24-year-old woman who died at Hospital Selayang in Selangor.
She had a history of diabetes, high blood pressure and chronic kidney disease.
Seventeen cases were classified as “brought in dead”, of which six had no underlying conditions.
Currently, 870 patients are in intensive care, with 433 on ventilator support.
There were 6,775 patients who were discharged from treatment yesterday.
Active cases went down to 60,117, from 61,162 the previous day.
The Health Ministry identified 21 new Covid-19 clusters, taking the number of active ones to 873 nationwide.
Of the new clusters, 18 are workplace outbreaks.
