TOKYO -- The first coronavirus case at the Olympic Village in Tokyo's Harumi area has been confirmed, the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games revealed on July 17.
The committee said that the infected person, who arrived from overseas, is not an athlete.
The organizing committee has been announcing infection numbers for people related to the games daily since July 1. The 15 cases reported on July 17 is the highest number yet.
Committee CEO Muto Toshiro told a news conference the same day, "The PCR test conducted yesterday came back positive. The individual is currently confined to a hotel."
According to the organizing committee, officials decided with the International Olympic Committee not to release the infected person's nationality, as this would likely lead to the person being identified.
