A COP has been airlifted to hospital with serious injuries after a crash with a motorbike going the wrong way down the busy M25.

       The officer was responding to reports of a stolen motorbike when he was hit on the clockwise carriageway near Junction 3 for Swanley at around 4pm.

       He was rushed to a London hospital by air ambulance, Kent Police confirmed.

       Driver Ben Smith, 54, spotted the bike speed down the carriageway the wrong way - as cops pursued him from the other side.

       Ben, from Ipswich, said: "When the guy came past, he wasn’t wearing a crash-helmet.

       "It looked very odd. He looked calm apart from the fact he was driving the wrong way down the M25.

       "I hope the officer is going to be ok."

       Tributes have flooded in for the injured cop - who remains in hospital.

       The British Transport Police said: "Best wishes from all of us to the officer involved and his family, both at work and at home.

       "Wishing you a quick and trouble free recover."

       East Wickham Police Team added: "Thoughts with your officer and we wish him a speedy recovery.

       "His colleagues attending the scene were top class. Well done."

       Kent Police tweeted: "The M25 has reopened in both directions following an incident in which a motorcycle driving the wrong way near J3 for Swanley collided with one of our officers, causing him serious injuries.

       "A man has been arrested in connection with the incident. Thank you for your patience."

       Both carriageways of the M25 were shut close to Junction 3 earlier today - but they have since been reopened.
