A state school in London has secured more Oxbridge places for its students than Eton College for the first time.

       Brampton Manor Academy, in Newham, confirmed that 55 of its pupils met their offer grades and accepted places at either Oxford or Cambridge on Tuesday.

       Fifty-five pupils were offered Oxbridge places this spring, the school confirmed in March, as Oxford and Cambridge seek to increase their state school intake.

       Eton College, the ￡42,500-a-year school in Windsor where around 1,300 students study, had 48 Oxbridge offers made to its Year 13 pupils this year.

       "We are really pleased to confirm that 55 of our students have now secured their places at Oxford and Cambridge universities," Brampton Academy wrote on social media. "Well done to you all. We are very proud of you."

       The school describes itself as having an "unrivalled progression rate to the elite Russell Group universities" and has one of the top performing sixth form colleges in the country.

       It receives an estimated 3,000 applications for around 300 places per year, with some students travelling for as much as two hours in order to attend its classes.

       Dr Dayo Olukosh, the headmaster of Brampton, told The Telegraph that his pupils, two-thirds of whom are eligible for free school meals, are "just as capable as their privileged peers".

       "There is a strong culture of high expectation that runs through everything we do here, right from the cleaners to myself," he said.

       In 2019, a total of 41 Brampton students received Oxbridge offers, compared to 62 offers for Eton leavers.

       It is not known how many Eton pupils made the grades to accept their places, or whether any further offers were made through the adjustment process.
