GEORGE TOWN: Five more people have been arrested by police in connection with a fight involving a group of car towing workers at the Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway on Wednesday (Jan 26).

       George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong (pic) said this followed the arrest of five other suspects on Wednesday (Jan 26).

       "In total police have detained 10 suspects in connection with the case," he said in a statement on Friday (Jan 28).

       ACP Soffian said the suspects were all from Penang and aged between 21 and 54.

       An initial drug test on the suspects returned negative, he added.

       However, he said six suspects have records for criminal and drug offences.

       Two of the 10 have been released on police bail while the remaining eight have been remanded until Monday (Jan 31) and are being held at the Bayan Baru police station centralised lock-up for further investigation, he added.

       In the 2pm incident on Wednesday, 20 men were believed to have come to blows because of a misunderstanding over which group had the right to tow the vehicles involved in an accident.

       Police from the district headquarters were unable to stop the fight, and the suspects fled once motorcycle units and mobile patrol vehicles arrived.

       Five suspects were picked up in various parts of George Town shortly after the incident.

       Prior to that, videos of the fight had gone viral on social media.

       The accident involved a lorry carrying mosaic tiles and two cars.

       The case is being investigated under Section 148 of the Penal Code for rioting with weapons.
