KUALA LUMPUR: Some 2,692 people were detained for driving while intoxicated throughout last year, says Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Nadzri Hussain.
The Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department deputy director said they were apprehended in 1,249 operations codenamed Ops Mabuk nationwide.
“We have always been consistent in curbing driving while under the influence of alcohol.
“The blood alcohol level of those detained were above the permitted limit,” he told reporters during a special traffic operation yesterday.
The department also issued 24,293 summonses for various traffic offences in 3,017 Ops Samseng Jalanan exercises conducted last year, he added.
“We also detained 2,491 individuals for several traffic offences, including driving and riding without a licence.
“A total of 3,294 vehicles were also seized last year,” he said.
DCP Mohd Nadzri said 48,798 summonses were issued last year for running a red light.
“Most of the offences were committed by motorcyclists (24,636) followed by car drivers (19,180),” he said.
For going against the flow of traffic, DCP Mohd Nadzri said 385 summonses were issued.
These involved 158 motorcycles, 171 cars, 23 lorries and 28 four-wheel drives, among others, he said.On the New Year’s Eve’s operation, DCP Mohd Nadzri said some 2,462 members from various agencies including the police, the Road Transport Department and the National Anti-Drug Agency were involved.
“The objective of the operation was to reduce the number of fatal accidents, ensuring motorists abide by traffic laws and ensuring smooth traffic,” he said.
He advised road users to be mindful of the safety of everyone and obey existing laws.
