KLANG: Selangor Umno chief Noh Omar (pic) has given his assurance that he will not back a call of no-confidence against the government of the day in the event Parliament reconvenes soon.
“I will not agree if a motion of no-confidence is tabled during the upcoming Parliament sitting in my capacity as the sole Selangor Barisan Nasional MP,’’ said the Tanjung Karang MP.
Noh said in a statement on Tuesday (June 22) that he also backs Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s call recently after chairing the party’s political bureau meeting for Parliament to reconvene within the next 14 days.
“Selangor Umno urges Parliament to reconvene for the members of the Dewan Rakyat to debate the Emergency Ordinance and the National Recovery Plan to fight Covid-19 (and keep it) from spreading further in the country as well as to reinstate the nation’s economy,’’ said Noh.
He also added that all of Selangor’s 21 Umno division chiefs are also in full support of Ahmad Zahid’s call for Parliament to be reconvened soon.
According to Noh, although the current practice required a 28-day notice for Parliament to sit, the Speaker had the power to call for a sitting within 14 days.
Ahmad Zahid had said after chairing the political bureau meeting that the government of the day must initiate a Parliamentary sitting within 14 days beginning Monday (June 21).
He said it could be regarded as treason as well as an act of disrespect given that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah had called for Parliament to reconvene as soon as possible following a meeting with the Conference of Rulers last week.
