GEORGE TOWN: The precast crosshead installation on the Package Two Bypass Project from Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu Expressway to Air Itam is a safe and commonly used method in the country’s construction industry.

       In a statement released by Penang Infrastructure Corporation,it said the method had been used in the construction of Light, Rapid Transit (LRT), Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) 2 SSP Line and also the BESRAYA Highway.

       It said the crosshead at Thean Teik Highway is safely secured on the top of the hanging beam by four prestressed bars.

       It also said during lifting, the segment on the centre of gravity is heavier on one side (wing wall side), hence the tilting of the segment.

       "The segment will be adjusted and fine-tuned into ‘final position’.

       "The design of this crosshead has a ‘stitch’, which is the gap seen between the middle segment and the two side segments.

       This stitching will be cast in-situ with concrete after segments are in final position," the statement read.
