Britain's longest-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II, will mark an unprecedented 70 years on the throne in 2022. The nation is pulling out all the stops for the Platinum Jubilee next year with a range of commemorative events planned. And in honour of the significant milestone, the Royal Mint has announced a new 50p coin will be launched for the occasion.

       The Queen herself has approved the 50p coin to mark what will be 70 years on the throne on February 6, 2022.

       Budding coin enthusiasts will only have to wait a few more months before the commemorative 50p coin is launched.

       The Queen's Platinum Jubilee 50p coin will be released in 2022, the Royal Mint has announced.

       Clare Maclennan, divisional director of commemorative coin at the Royal Mint, said: "The Royal Mint has a proud history of striking coins for British monarchs and 2022 sees one of the greatest celebrations of Her Majesty the Queen with the upcoming Platinum Jubilee.

       "Marking 70 days until the anniversary of the Queen's accession to the throne, the Royal Mint is delighted to reveal the commemorative Platinum Jubilee 50p design ahead of its launch in the new year.

       "In recognition of the landmark occasion, this is the first time a royal milestone has been commemorated on a 50p coin and is a fitting celebration for Britain's longest reigning monarch."

       Coin enthusiasts can already register their interest in the Platinum Jubilee 50 pence piece on the Royal Mint website.

       The new 50p coin for the Platinum Jubilee includes the number 70, to reflect the Queen's years on the throne.

       The Queen's cypher will be framed within the zero, which makes up the centrepiece of the design.

       The obverse of the coin will feature a commemorative portrait of the Queen that is yet to be revealed.

       This coin will mark the first time a royal event has been depicted on the tails side of a 50p coin.

       In addition to this 50p piece, the Royal Mint is expected to reveal two new decorative designs in the coming months.

       To the delight of coin fans, there will be a special edition ￡5 crown to mark the Platinum Jubilee.

       The Royal Mint said on its website: "We’ll soon reveal two more beautifully decorative designs, including a crowned depiction of the Royal Arms accompanied by the years 1952 and 2022.

       "Another regal design will appear on a number of the premium coins in the collection through a crowned depiction of the Royal Cypher surrounded by the floral emblems of the United Kingdom.

       "These coins also feature a special jubilee portrait on the obverse."

       The Royal Mint has produced several coins marking the milestones of the Queen's reign in recent decades.

       Commemorative coins were released by the Royal Mint to mark the Queen's Silver Jubilee (1977), Golden Jubilee (2002) and Diamond Jubilee (2012).
