PETALING JAYA: Former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin says he does not want to be dragged into the ongoing controversy surrounding Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki and the latter’s appointment as the enforcement agency’s head.

       Muhyidin said Azam's appointment was done according to procedure after being vetted by a committee headed by the chief secretary to the government.

       “It was not me who appointed him but it was certified by the committee led by the Chief Secretary to the Government who had proposed his name,” Muhyiddin said during a press conference which was aired live on his Facebook page today (Jan10).

       This is after Pengerang MP Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said questioned whether Muhyiddin had conducted due diligence before appointing Azam as MACC chief commissioner in March 2020.

       Muhyiddin also believed that there was no breach of procedure in the appointment of Azam as the MACC chief.

       "That was all certified by a committee and the Chief Secretary proposed his name and I, as the prime minister agreed, before submitting Azam's name to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, who later consented to it," said Muhyiddin.

       "I don't think there should be any issues raised by any parties on this," he added.
