IGP: Limit call is traffic chief’s personal opinion

KUALA LUMPUR: The call to limit the issuance of Motor Vehicle Licences to senior citizens is the personal opinion of Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) director Comm Datuk Azisman Alias.

Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said the suggestion was the personal view of Comm Azisman.

“It has not been discussed thoroughly. JSPT, which is involved in ensuring the safety of roads, is always looking at measures to increase road safety for the benefit of the people,” he said in a statement yesterday.

Acryl Sani said any new safety measure would only be introduced once a study had been conducted and its implementation agreed upon among the relevant parties.

On Friday, Comm Azisman proposed that the government limit the issuance of Motor Vehicle Licences to senior citizens as their health conditions could contribute to road accidents.

He also suggested that senior citizens do medical check-ups and get approval from doctors to ascertain that they were fit to drive.

“Elderly people are more likely to suffer from health conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease and blurred vision, which can indirectly cause road accidents,” he said.
