JOHOR BARU: The Johor Education Department has been directed to monitor online videos depicting school bullying cases in the state.

Newly-appointed education and information committee chairman Aznan Tamin said the main intention is to determine the authenticity of the clips.

“We want to know whether the videos of these bullying cases really happened in Johor or elsewhere," he told a press conference on Tuesday (March 5) after witnessing the signing of a note of understanding (NoU) between the department and Uda Land (South) Sdn Bhd on environmental sustainability initiatives.

Aznan said there were cases where old videos were recirculated on social media platforms or incidents that took place elsewhere were said to be in Johor.

“The act of spreading the videos, regardless of whether they are new or old, without verifying with the relevant authorities can lead to public anxiety, especially among parents," said the Tanjung Surat assemblyman.

Separately, Aznan said the state would embark on initiatives to reduce single-use plastics at schools under the Johor Sustainability Education Action Plan and Johor Sustainable Development Plan 2030.

“We are starting with four schools selected under the NoU and will extend the initiatives to more schools in the near future," he added.

The schools selected are SK Kompleks Uda, SK Bandar Uda 2, SMK Bandar Uda Utama and SMK Bandar Baru Uda.

Aznan said parents can play their part by packing meals for their children in tiffin carriers or reusable food containers instead of polystyrene food boxes.
