PETALING JAYA: The act of selling driving licences illegally through bribery cannot be taken lightly and any party involved will be punished, says Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The Transport Minister said he is taking such allegations, which have gone viral, very seriously.

“If the allegations are proven true, I will ensure that any parties involved will be punished.

“In fact, this issue is also being investigated by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC),” he said in a statement on Sunday (Dec 5).

Dr Wee added that the activity of selling licences by accepting bribes from those who did not pass the driving test is a serious matter.

“The test prescribed by the driving institute is an important procedure that has to be followed, not just to be exposed to the rules on the road, but also with the aim of gaining a clear understanding on road safety before one is able to obtain a driving licence,” he said.

On Saturday (Dec 4), the Road Transport Department (JPJ) said it would investigate, together with the MACC, allegations made by social media influencer Azrul Affandi Sobry on illegal driving licences or "lesen terbang".

Azrul Affandi had claimed that there were JPJ officers who were directly involved in selling licences illegally by accepting bribes even though the candidates did not pass the test.
