GEORGE TOWN: Consumers in Penang island's South-West District will have 24 hours' breathing space until a scheduled water supply disruption now that the unexpected interruption caused by the damaged Prai River pipeline is almost resolved.

The Penang Water Supply Corporation (PBAPP) said the remaining 16% of consumers affected by the water cut after the 1,350mm pipe ruptured on Tuesday (Jan 23) are set to get their supply back by Sunday (Jan 28) evening.

Earlier, it said re-clamping work on the pipe had been completed and 84% (108,000) of the 120,000 affected customers had their supply restored by 6.30pm on Saturday (Jan 27).

PBAPP had previously announced a scheduled water supply interruption to carry out diversion and reconnection works to two new 600mm pipelines at Prai River to replace the old 1,350mm one.

On Sunday, it said the planned cut would be deferred to Monday (Jan 29) to give consumers hit by the unexpected disruption enough time to store water.

Recovery from the scheduled disruption will begin in stages from Tuesday (Jan 30), with resumption of full supply set for Wednesday (Jan 31), it added.

The pipe leak incident on Tuesday was the third such occurrence within about a month, the other two being on Dec 18 and Jan 12.
