TOKYO -- Police arrested a man on Aug. 28 over an acid attack at a subway station here that left two people injured earlier this week.

The Metropolitan Police Department arrested Hirotaka Hanamori, 25, on suspicion of assault for allegedly throwing what appeared to be sulfuric acid at a 22-year-old man at Shirokane-takanawa Station in Minato Ward on Tokyo Metro's Namboku Line on the night of Aug. 24, leaving him seriously injured. A 34-year-old woman also sustained minor injuries in the incident.

Hanamori, from the city of Shizuoka's Aoi Ward, had been placed on a nationwide wanted list in connection with the case. He was detained in Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa.

Police believe it is highly likely that the suspect targeted the victim. Both attended the same university, according to sources close to the investigation.
