ALOR STAR: A police inspector and two lance corporals have been remanded for five days for allegedly soliciting bribes from a suspect in a drug case.
The remand order was issued by a Sungai Petani Magistrate's Court on Wednesday (June 23).
The 33-year-old inspector and two lance corporals, aged 24 and 30, were detained by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers in Bandar Baharu, Kedah, between 12.10am and 2.30am on Wednesday.
They were detained to help in investigations for allegedly soliciting bribes amounting to RM15,000 and receiving RM2,000 from the suspect as an inducement to release him from a drug possession offence.
Clad in mufti, the policemen arrived in two MACC vehicles and were produced in court at about 10.30am.
Court Registrar Mohammad Alif Abdul Aziz granted the remand order under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code to allow MACC to investigate further.
State MACC director Datuk Shaharom Nizam Abd Manap confirmed the arrests in a statement and said the remand order is until Sunday (June 27).
“They were remanded to assist investigations under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009,” he said.
