Interior denies State Security attack on Imam

KUWAIT CITY, May 1: MPs have reacted to the viral video clip of the alleged attack of the Imam of Al-Hussain Mosque by a State Security officer. This is considered a sectarian issue since the incident occurred in a Shiite Mosque.

MP Obaid Al-Wasmi asked First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad to apologize and resign after imposing the penalty on the erring officer. He addressed the minister: “You have done everything to evoke feelings through inconvenient excuses.”

MP Hesham Al-Saleh said he is worried about the infiltration of the State Security General Department. He called on the minister to conduct an investigation and punish those involved in the incident.

MP Ali Al-Qattan stressed that the incident will not pass quietly unless the responsible for the attack is punished.

MP Ahmed Al-Hamad has communicated with the Office of the Interior Minister and he was informed that the issue is being investigated.

MP Muhammad Al-Mutair asserted the minister is the subject of a systematic war; because of his pro-reform approach that foiled the destructive attempts of the deep State and disrupted corruption plots.

MP Soud Bu Sleeb confirmed support for all measures that the minister will take to address the issue.

MP Hassan Jawhar urged the minister to punish those behind the incident aimed at causing damage to national unity. He added that breaking into worship places and attacking scholars are not part of the directives of the minister.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Interior issued a statement denying that a security man attacked the Imam of the mosque; adding the latter did not cooperate with the three-member committee tasked to monitor the collection of donations. The ministry affirmed that the Imam was referred to the relevant police station where legal steps have been taken.

On the other hand, MP Osama Al-Shaheen praised the concerned authorities and inspectors for the proper implementation of the decision of the Council of Ministers to ban the collection of cash donations for charities. He disclosed that a certain mosque collected cash donations in 2020; then in 2021, security forces found out a cell in the mosque which the Public Prosecution had charged with financing terrorism and money laundering.
