Major blow for Putin after Ukrainian drones blow up Crimea ammo dump (Image: Telegram)

       Russian-occupied Crimea has been rocked by two huge explosions in an ammunition depot.

       The attack is understood to be caused by Ukrainian drones.

       The illegally annexed region has been the repeated target of attacks in a series of humiliations for Vladimir Putin.

       Sergei Aksyonov, the Moscow-installed leader of the region, reported the drone attack had succeeded in hitting an ammunition depot and there were no known casualties.

       People in the area have been evacuated following the assault.

       Mr Aksyonov said on Telegram: "As a result of an enemy drone on the Krasnogvardeisky district, there was a detonation at an ammunition depot."

       "A decision was taken to evacuate people [living] within five kilometres" of the zone, he added.

       He did not specify which location was hit but he did add that the attack was in the Krasnogvardeisky district, which lies inland at the centre of the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea.

       The governor added train traffic will be stopped on the peninsula "to minimise risks".

       Footage shows multiple explosions near the city of Simferopol, followed by a giant plume of black smoke.

       According to various social media posts, an oil depot and airfield were struck by drones as well as an ammunition depot.

       The attack follows several on Russian soil in recent weeks as Kyiv launches a counteroffensive to retake lost land.

       Ukraine has said this includes Crimea.

       Speaking remotely to the Aspen Security Forum on Friday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia's Crimea bridge must be "neutralised," adding the bridge "supplies ammunition to the Crimean peninsula."

       Kyiv considers the bridge, created by Vladimir Putin in 2018, an "enemy object" built in violation of international law.

       Asked if Kyiv aims to return Crimea in its counteroffensive, Zelensky said: "The goal is to return all of Crimea, because it is our sovereign state, and our sovereign territory is an integral part of our state."

       On Monday a hole was blasted in the bridge, prompting Russia to declare an "emergency".

       And later on Wednesday, a massive fireball erupted after Ukraine struck an ammo depot behind Russian lines at a military base on the Crimean Peninsula.

       A mushroom cloud erupted over Starokrymsky military training ground, with explosions carrying on there for more than five hours.
