The Chicago Fire Department’s hazmat team responded to an ammonia gas leak at Home City Ice in the West Elsdon neighborhood Thursday morning, fire officials said. The area’s air quality was “good” and residents were able to safely leave their homes as of 7:39 a.m.
A large plume was visible from the ice plant at 3604 W. 59th St., fire officials said. Hydrants were opened to help dispel the ammonia while crews attempted to enter the building to shut off gas valves.
