Ample stocks of vaccines expected in July, says Khairy

PETALING JAYA: Vaccination centres (PPVs) nationwide can expect to have ample stocks of vaccines in July to cope with the increased utilisation rate as more stocks are expected to arrive, says Khairy Jamaluddin.

"Our utilisation rate is now at 90% and there have been incidents where the PPVs have run out of stock and a fresh supply could only be delivered within two days," he said, adding that some states used up their vaccine supplies quicker than the arrival of new stocks.

The National Covid-19 Immunisation Programme coordinating minister said although these instances were rare, there have been cases where vaccine recipients had to return home without their jabs because the PPV had run out of vaccines.

He added that vaccine recipients who did not get their shots on the day of their appointment had their slots rescheduled.

Khairy, who visited the PPV at Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) on Saturday (June 26) said the problem would be rectified with proper planning.

He added that insufficient supply could be less of a problem by next month as more vaccines are to be delivered to Malaysia.

Khairy also assured that vaccine supplies would arrive on time and they were working together with AstraZeneca and the Thai government to ensure there is no supply disruption.

Currently, Khairy said seven million out of the eight million doses in supply have been used and the balance is being distributed to states.

Separately, Khairy said Selangor would be getting more than 20% of the total vaccine supply to further accelerate the vaccination drive in the state.

"The vaccination rate in Selangor has increased with the opening of more PPVs and the utilisation rate has picked up," he said.

Khairy said the vaccination drive in Selangor had previously vaccinated 20,000 people a day before increasing that rate to 50,000 a day, but added that the state needed to do more to reach the goal of 100,000 per day.
