Cornwall branded 'overcrowded, overpriced and uncharming' in angry backlash

Caitlin Moran visited Porth, near Newquay, during what has been a busy summer for domestic tourism due to the pandemic. The holidaymaker eventually gave up on the chips after her long wait in the queue.

And Cornwall Live reports Caitlin has since described the county as "chaotically rammed".

Ms Moran, who is an influential journalist and broadcaster, penned a review which was published in The Times at the weekend.

It reads: "Despite Britain being full of incredibly beautiful countryside – the Welsh Marches; Cumbria; Ayrshire; a place I once went to near Stafford – Cornwall is a disproportionately fashionable place to holiday, and so demand madly outstrips supply.

"We’ve all seen the news story about one Cornish holiday home being advertised for £71,000 a week. We’ve all seen the rammed beaches and booked-out cafés. We all know how badly it affects the people who live in places warped by mass tourism. We know they’d actually like roughly half of us to just f*** off. And yet we still go."

She added Cornwall has essentially been added to the "bucket lists" of many Brits, which has made the county "overcrowded, overpriced and uncharming."

Cornwall has been named the top UK tourist destination at the British Travel Awards for the last nine years in a row and there were reports that 98% of holiday accommodation in Cornwall was booked up for the summer months by June.

This has led to locals being "priced out of home towns that are ghostly empty in winter and chaotically rammed with dawdling gawkers in high season," Ms Moran said.

The situation, which residents claim has left many priced-out of the property market, has prompted campaigners to make urgent calls for action to be taken to address the housing crisis.

A demonstration is set to take place later this month in Truro, south Cornwall, to demand immediate action.
