Prince Philip was stunned at how "antiquated" Buckingham Palace was, according to a Gyles Brandreth. The former MP had been a friend of the late Duke of Edinburgh. For a segment on ITV Lorraine, he toured around a new exhibition for the royal, recounting stories from his life.

       Mr Brandreth said: "I was lucky enough to meet the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace.

       "He first arrived at the Palace as consort in 1952.

       "He told me he couldn't believe how antiquated it all was.

       "He devised an internal intercom."

       The royal biographer continued: "He devised an internal intercom.

       "It was kept in use for many many years."

       The exhibition celebrating the life of the Duke has opened at Windsor Castle.

       It has been curated by the Royal Collection Trust and features pieces marking key moments during his official duties for the Queen.

       Mr Brandreth spoke about the 1992 Windsor Castle fire.

       In a hallway in Windsor he added: "This is where the terrible fire of November 1992 began.

       "It was at the end of the year that the Queen, at the time, described as her 'annus horribilis'."

       Prince Philip's death was announced by Buckingham Palace on April 9.

       He was 99 years old when he passed away.

       This made him one of the longest living royals ever.

       Additionally he holds the record as the nation's longest serving consort.

       His funeral took place in St George's Chapel in Windsor on April 17.
