Royal Family tradition Queen still follows today started in tragic circumstances

The "walkabout," which is widely attributed to the Queen, was actually started by Queen Mary, according to royal expert Dickie Arbiter. Fast forward to know and it seems almost every public royal engagement involves a "walkabout," where members of the royal family meet well-wishers gathered on the streets. Before that, royal watchers could only catch a glimpse of the family when they drove past in a car.

Former Press Secretary to the Queen, Dickie Arbiter speaks about the "walkabout" on The Royal Beat.

Mr Arbiter said: "It was Queen Mary who first started the walkabout during World War One with the King.

"They went up and down the country. They went on bomb sites, they toured derelict areas of the UK after the end of World War One.

"It was George the fifth who actually introduced the Order of the British Empire, something for everybody rather than the aristocracy and the senior generals.

"So yes, they are doing what King George the fifth and Queen Mary did after World War One, which is good, lessons learned from previous generations."

The Queen did add something to the royal tradition.

Princess Anne explained in the documentary, Queen of the World, that original walkabouts were far more simple.

She explained: "We never shook hands. The theory was, you couldn't shake hands with everybody, so don't start."

Eventually, that changed. The Queen made a decision to personally greet royal watchers nearly half a century ago.

Now, we often see royal fans and crowds getting handshakes and engaging in short conversations with members of the Royal Family.

Some members of the family still don't do handshakes, but others embrace the crowd wholeheartedly.

The Duchess of Cambridge interacts with the crowds so much that it's a source of comedy for the other members.

The Duchess stated in the documentary: "There’s a real art to walkabouts, everybody teases me in the family that I spend far too long chatting."

"I still have to learn a little bit more, and to pick up a few more tips, I suppose."
