Eight of the ten tallest bridges in the world are located in China.

And the emperor among them has to be the breathtaking Beipanjiang Bridge.

The suspension bridge towers 565 metres above the Beipanjiang Grand Valley and according to the Guiness World Records is the highest in the world.

It is so high that it can fit New York's Empire State Building underneath it with more than 100 metres to spare.

The bridge also measures 1,341 metres in length and has four traffic lanes.

The eastern tower rises to an astonishing 269 metres (883 feet).

The bridge connects the provinces of Guizhou and Yunnan, two of the poorest rural regions in China.

The Beipanjiang, which opened in December 2016, is intended to stimulate economic growth, enhance living conditions, and connect distant areas to the rest of the country by providing a dependable transit link over the river.

Its construction had to overcome many difficulties and challenges, such as complicated geological conditions and harsh weather in the mountainous region.

In particular engineers had to deal with the problem of a vast numbers of caves in the terrain.

Peng Yundong, the deputy chief engineer told the BBC: "Our biggest challenge was the foundations.

"We scanned the area below the towers and found some caverns. One huge cavern stretched more than 100 metres. We had to drill through large caverns to find solid areas and fill smaller ones with concrete."

The vital transport link was built by the Guizhou Road and Bridge Group Company using cutting edge engineering practices.

It serves as not only a transportation infrastructure but also a tourist attraction due to its grandeur and height.

The Beipanjiang Bridge took three years to build and cost around £120 million.
