West Midlands Police were called to an address in Earlsdon Avenue North on Sunday morning to conduct a safe and well check on a man and child. Officers have been at the scene since just before 12.20am. Around four ambulances have been called to the scene.
A man inside the property has refused to come out.
Specialist officers have been dispatched and armed officers are at the scene.
A spokesperson for the force said: "We went to conduct a safe and well check on a man and a child at an address in Earlsdon Avenue North, Coventry, just before 12.20am this morning (January 9).
"A man inside the property is refusing to come out.
"Specialist resources have been called and officers remain at the scene this afternoon.
"The road is sealed off while officers deal with the situation."
According to Coventry Live, Earlsdon Avenue North is blocked off between the main roundabout by The City Arms up to the junction with Highland Road/Kensington Road.
Newcombe Road is also believed to be closed off from Albany Road.

Several bus routes have changed following the closure of the roads.
NX Coventry tweeted: "SERVICE DIVERSION: Earlsdon Avenue North.
"Due to police incident and road closure, Earlsdon Avenue North, service 11 is diverted via Albany Road, Butts Rd, Hearsall ln.
"We apologise for any inconvenience."

Residents have been told not to leave their house, according to witnesses.
One person said they are "locked in my house".
While another said police "would not" let him leave his house.
Footage shared on social media show the large-scale operation as the police presence continues to grow.
A resident livng near to the scenes in Earlsdon told CoventryLive: "I hadn't noticed anything until around noon when I opened our blinds and saw about four or five police cars and a van.
"At that time there was only one armed officer, but over the course of the next three or four hours they presence of armed police slowly increased to the point that now there's between 10 and 20 armed officers here.
"There are at least six police cars and vans, four of five unmarked cars and four ambulances."
