KULAI: A man caught on camera dumping a Hindu idol into a rubbish bin here is now being sought by police.

       Kulai OCPD Supt Tok Beng Yeow said the police received a report on the incident from the idol's owner at 4.30pm on Sunday (May 15).

       “We have also recorded statements from the complainant.

       “The incident was believed to have taken place at about 9am on the same day in front of the complainant’s house in Taman Scientex, Senai.

       “According to the complainant, the religious idol was placed in the front yard of his house for decorative purposes,” he said in a statement on Friday (May 20).

       He noted that the complainant also informed police that the idol was not damaged and had been replaced in its original position.

       “We have taken a copy of the CCTV recording for further investigation under Section 427 of the Penal Code for committing mischief, where if found guilty, the suspect could be sentenced to a maximum of two years jail or fined, or both,” he said.

       Supt Tok also urged those with information about the incident or who know the suspect to come forward and notify the police.

       Earlier, a 42-second video depicting the act was uploaded on Facebook by user Krishnamoorthy Vichu and was widely shared.

       As of 1pm Friday, the video has received 215,000 views, 4,100 shares and 976 comments.
