Plea to ‘toughen asylum laws’ after more migrants attempt to cross Channel

The Home Office confirmed that on Monday, 82 people on three boats were rescued or intercepted, while the French stopped 86 migrants on four boats. This followed more than 1,000 people attempting to cross from France over four days including last weekend.

More than 27,000 people have sailed to the UK from France in small boats this year.

Tom Pursglove, minister for justice and tackling illegal migration, said: "The Nationality and Borders Bill…will make it a criminal offence to knowingly arrive in the UK illegally, and introduce life sentences for those who facilitate illegal entry into the country."
