SEPANG: Covid-19 self-test kits can be obtained for as low as RM6.90 per unit, says Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He said the sale of these kits would be expanded to more premises and made available at supermarkets, convenience stores and petrol stations.
"For sure, this is good news as far as consumers are concerned, considering the current situation and the need for self-tests to be carried out,” he said at the launching of the sale of Covid-19 self-test kits at KK Super Mart at KLIA2 here on Monday (Nov 1).
Nanta said although his ministry was informed the price of these kits was being offered at RM6.90 per unit, there were outlets such as KK Super Mart that were selling them at a lower price of RM6.60 per unit.
Prior to this, Covid-19 self-test kits that had received conditional approval from the Medical Device Authority were sold at selected clinics and pharmacies.
The government had set the maximum retail price for the kits at RM19.90 per unit, and the wholesale price of RM16 per unit effective Sept 5.
Nanta said the decision to expand the sales of Covid-19 test kits would be beneficial and result in a drop in prices, improve competitiveness in the retail sector and maintain supply.
As of Thursday (Oct 28), 2,570 business premises nationwide have been given the go-ahead to sell the self-test kits, of which 494 outlets are under the management of KK Supermart & Superstore Sdn Bhd, he added.
On the new ceiling price of the test kits, he said the matter would be announced soon and that the price would be determined after taking into consideration all aspects, including the interest of consumers and traders.
The existing ceiling price will be lowered to a level which is considered fair to both consumers and businesses, said Nanta. "The new ceiling price must also take into account the fact that businesses need to import the kits.
"For consumers, we need to ensure they can purchase the items according to their needs including brand and quality,” he said. Nanta believes that competition will result in lower pricing of the goods at retail level.
