PETALING JAYA: Two Malaysians have been arrested at Coimbatore International Airport in Tamil Nadu for trying to smuggle 4.2kg of gold into India.
The Times of India reported that the duo, a man and a woman, were arrested upon arriving in Tamil Naidu from Singapore on Friday (April 29).
It said the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) had checked the duo’s bags and found the gold, which was in the form of bullion.
“DRI officers intercepted the passengers at Coimbatore International Airport on Friday evening upon their arrival from Singapore based on suspicion.
"The accused were produced before the chief judicial magistrate on Saturday (April 30).
"They will be lodged in the Puzhal Central Prison (in Chennai)," it reported, adding that authorities valued the gold at RM1.28mil (22.6 million rupees).
Investigations are ongoing.
Those entering India are only allowed to bring in a limited quantity of gold ornaments.
