Disturbing footage has emerged online of England's Chief Medical Officer Prof Chris Whitty being harassed by two men as he walked near St James' Park. The men grabbed Professor Whitty, who looked visibly concerned by the assault before he managed to free himself and walk away. Sky News presenter Kay Burley was shocked when she noted a police vehicle could be seen parked in the background of the footage.

Ms Burley said: "The men in this video should be ashamed.

"More than that, you can see them quite clearly so I am guessing the police will have something to say about that.

"Chris Whitty being assaulted as he minded his own business walking around.

"There was a police van there, did you see that?

"There is a police vehicle in the back of that shot.

"That is something we will be looking at in a bit more detail."

That Police is aware of the incident and they intervened, with the yobs being reprimanded

The video has been widely condemned with viewers dubbing it "disgusting" and calling for a wider investigation into the two individuals.

Tory MP and Schools Minister Nick Gibb discussed the video while speaking on Sky News with Kay Burley this morning.

He said: "I think this scene is absolutely appalling and I am sure all of your viewers and the public will condemn this behaviour.

"Chris Whitty has done a fantastic job throughout the pandemic in advising the Government of the necessary measures to keep our NHS safe, save lives and he has been a very effective Chief Medical Officer during that period, those scenes shouldn't have happened.

"This is now a police matter and I hope the whole weight of the law will come down on people who engage in that behaviour."

One Twitter user condemned the incident saying: "This is shocking, he looks very distressed.

"Can't we come up with some security for the poor guy before someone takes things too far?"

While another tweeted: "It's harassment, assault and also breaching social distancing rules.

       "It is not banter."
