'Selfish' tourists slammed for parking campervan on beach where no cars allowed

The vehicle was dumped on the sand overnight, angerring locals near Swanpool beach in Falmouth, Cornwall. A sign on the beach reads "No cars on the beach, thank you".

Locals said they challenged the family, but they stayed on the beach overnight anyway.

There are reports that they also lit a fire on the beach.

Speaking to Cornwall Live, one resident said a child was part of the group.

Maria Harris said: "Just a warning to people that cross Swanpool beach tonight, a camper van literally on the beach in front of the café with a couple of people and a child.

"Claiming they're ok to stay on the beach until the morning as nowhere in the area for them to camp, burning plastic on the fire etc.

"There's a sign clearly saying not to take vehicles on the beach."

Residents said they called police but Devon and Cornwall Constabulary said nothing had been recorded on their system.

Writing online, locals condemned the behaviour.

One posted: "Campervans should be towed away and impounded. Disgusting behaviour."

Another shared: "These type of tourists give a bad name to the genuine ones who do follow the rules."

A third said: "People have no respect anymore."

Another comment reads: "This sort of behaviour needs to stop."

Pressure has grown recently for the UK's holiday destinations to introduce a tax on tourism to help local economies.

It's argued places like Falmouth and Blackpool, Lancashire, should tax those visiting the popular holiday destination to pay for the litter and strain on public services caused by tourists.
