EERIE ghost-like creatures have been spotted emerging from the depths of the sea to spook beachgoers - but can YOU guess what they really are?

The Newry Beach ghouls are an iconic sighting off the coast of Holyhead, Anglesey - with the human-like figures protruding from the water at low-tide.

Many have likened the creatures to sea ghosts - especially when spotted under the moonlight on a chilly autumn evening.

But the structures have a much more mundane explanation.

They are in fact the seaweed-coated remnants of Holyhead’s old lifeboat ramp.

The stretch of water surrounding the "ghouls" is notoriously treacherous, the Daily Post reports.

One incident in 1855 saw seven crewmembers from the RNLI lifeboat station lose their lives as they desperately tried to reach vessels stuck at sea.

Visitor Craig Fairclough snapped the latest shots of the seaweed figures and shared them online.

"I thought it would make a good photo, so I grabbed my mobile phone.

"It was a spur of the moment thing. After the picture was posted on Facebook, it was shared widely with people saying how unique and atmospheric it looked."

Others were quick to comment on their ghostly likeness.

One commenter wrote: "I wouldn’t like to see them on a dark evening, very spooky.”

Another added: "Actually that’s quite scary.... especially if seen in the moonlight."
