Prince Andrew Drive ‘should be renamed’ in wake of Duke of York sex abuse scandal

Prince Andrew Drive in Telford, Shropshire should be renamed in the wake of the Duke of York’s sex abuse scandal, those living in the street have said.

Amid the fallout from the civil case filed against him last August, the residents in Malinslee said they may put the issue to the council.

One resident said she may write to Telford and Wrekin Council to request that the road be renamed.

“We think it should change,” she said. “We’ve been thinking about writing to them. It’s not right that it’s named after him.”

Another local said they “wouldn’t mind seeing the back of that name”, but said that they would like it to remain connected to the Royal Family.

They added: “Maybe they could name it after Prince George, Princess Charlotte or Prince Louis," but also said: “There’s another street near here called Sussex Close, I wouldn’t want to live there either.”

Other residents of Prince Andrew Drive disagreed and said they would like the name to stay, including Terry and Kim Beech.

“I don’t think you can change it. You can’t keep rewriting history,” Mr Beech told The Shropshire Star, saying that it “doesn’t really bother” him.

“It’s always been Prince Andrew Drive. We don’t agree with what he might have done, but you can’t keep changing things. You can’t erase history. He’s still part of the Royal Family.”

Asked whether they would move into a house in a street named after somebody notorious, Mrs Beech replied: “You wouldn’t go and find a house on Jimmy Savile Street. I find the names of some of the new streets a bit ridiculous.”

However, the couple said no eyebrows had been raised when telling people their address.

Virginia Giuffre, now 38, sued the Duke in federal district court in August last year, alleging in a civil claim that he sexually abused or raped her on three separate occasions in 2001, when she was 17.

He has denied “any and all wrongdoing” and has issued a rebuttal denying each of her 73 claims.

If the case is not settled out of court, a jury trial is expected to take place in the autumn.
