Family 'forced to cancel' UK camping holiday as breed of dogs 'not welcome'

Jake Blackburn, 23, said he had booked Oxwich Camping Park for eight people alongside his family's three Staffordshire bull terriers - Bleu, Zane and Zeus. They booked the weekend escape in the Gower, south Wales, for this coming Friday to Sunday but became concerned when they claimed they saw on the venue's social media pages that "large dogs and certain dog breeds" were not allowed at the site.

And Jake rang the campsite and alleges he was told his family's dogs would not be welcome.

Jake told Wales Online: "We have never been put in a situation where we have been turned away because of the dogs.

"I think there is such a negative association towards Staffordshire bull terriers. At the end of the day, it's all down to how the owner brings them up, we were all really upset by the decision.

"Bleu is adorable and the love of my life, she wakes up with me before I go to work and waits for me to make her scrambled eggs. These dogs aren't nasty, evil or vicious. They are the most caring dog breed I have ever come across, it is really disappointing."

The family, from Port Talbot, south Wales, say the social media posts have disappeared from the page.

But some large dog breeds, including Staffordshire Bull terriers, often ger tarnished by the reputation of pit bulls.

The Staffordshire Bull terrier website reads: "Staffordshire bull terriers are an entirely different breed, but many people will lump all of these similar-looking dogs together as potentially dangerous. Thus, Staffordshire bull terriers may be targeted for 'banning' in certain areas, or refusal of homeowner insurance policies."

The Blackburn family dogs range from eight months to three years old.

Jake said: "It's rare that me and my girlfriend have weekends off with the family so we wanted to use this weekend with the dogs being there and a change of scenery but now we have had to look elsewhere."

Oxwich Camping Park, which is just a 10-minute walk from the Gower's most expansive stretches of sand, declinbed to comment on the accusations.

Domestic tourism is on the rise in the UK due to restrictions on foreign travel imposed by the pandemic.

While the industry brings money into touristy areas, including Cornwall, some locals have complained about antisocial behaviour and a strain on resources.
