The southbound ramp at Benfield Boulevard connecting to Interstate 97 was closed for five hours Wednesday morning near Millersville, Md., after a fatal tractor-trailer crash, according to Maryland State Police.

       Police said in a news release that according to a preliminary investigation, the tractor-trailer was traveling south on the interstate to the ramp at Benfield Boulevard, but the truck had “failed to negotiate the curve, traveled down an embankment and into a ditch where it overturned.”

       The driver, a male, was ejected and trapped beneath the vehicle, said the news release. Officers reached the scene about 5:10 a.m., and the driver was declared dead there, it said.

       Authorities closed the ramp and reopened it at about 10 a.m., police said, adding that the crash remains under investigation.
