A young boy has been left with a bleed on the brain after a trip to the pub to watch the football ended in a collision with a “speeding taxi”

Tommy Matthews, 16, from Borehamwood, flew out to Turkey on Sunday, August 31, expecting to have a sunny holiday with his friend, sister, mum, nan Pamela Matthews, and grandad.

But when leaving a bar in Marmaris, Turkey, on September 3 after watching a football match with his friend and mum, he was suddenly struck down by a “speeding taxi” leaving him with a small bleed to the brain, dislocated shoulder, and a fractured shoulder, reports HertsLive.

He is now waiting for a “fitness to fly” certificate, which his family hopes he should receive today (September 15), after being seen in two different hospitals, and a Gofundme has been set up by family friend Jayne Collins, who revealed the moment she was told about the horrifying ordeal.

Ms Collins said: “I got up Monday (September 4) morning to a message saying please contact me. I Whatsapp'd her and could see she was online and asked what was wrong, as obviously something was wrong. I didn't think in a million years it was Tommy.

"She typed 'Tommy was run over last night' and I rang her - where she was still at the hospital - and I just couldn't believe it. They were walking back to the hotel and right outside the hotel he got run over by a taxi that was just speeding."

When the shocking accident happened Tommy was taken to a nearby hospital, but when they discovered he had a bleed on the brain he was transferred to a second hospital, Pamela then told Ms Collins that he had staples in his head, and four metal bars “hanging out of his shoulder”.

She said: “His nan said he had a small bleed to the brain, a dislocated shoulder, and a fractured shoulder.

"She sent me a picture yesterday morning (Tuesday, September 12) and it doesn't look right to me. He has staples in his head and he can't get a top on as four bars are hanging out of his shoulder, and I think 'get him home and straight to the hospital here'."

While at the hospital with him, Pamela reportedly stated Tommy should receive a “fitness to fly” certificate today, September 15, and due to the language barrier, the Matthews family are said to not know what Tommy is suffering from.

The brave boy went through two operations on Monday and Tuesday, and Ms Collins said that his family knew that the blood flow in his arm was not right, and CT scans were taken to analyse the bleed on his brain.

Ms Collins set up a GoFundMe to help raise money for Tommy - who has endured a difficult time - after her daughter encouraged her.

She said: "It was my daughter the other day, as I was on WhatsApp talking to Pam - who keeps me updated - and she shouted out 'We'll do a GoFundMe page for Tommy'.

"I thought she would say no but she didn't and I thought - for Tom - he's had a tough time. I thought I'd try and raise some money and I would give him some now to spend and then keep some back to give to his nan. Whatever we get is a bonus that I'll give to him."

The money raised will help Tommy, as he did not enjoy a "proper" holiday due to the accident occurring just three days after they arrived. Ms Collins wants to use the money for Tommy to enjoy a holiday with his nan again and the rest will be used as spending money.
