The rise of the atomic, then hydrogen, bomb during and after the war led to a global stalemate as the USA and Russia (then the Soviet Union) entered into a nuclear standoff and the Cold War.
Experts say one of the reasons nuclear weapons acted to create a form of peace was because of a phenomenon known as Mutually Assured Destruction (MAD) in which neither side would fire because they knew the other side would retaliate, destroying them both.
