KUALA LUMPUR: Two wedding scam artists were detained after a bride-to-be lodged a police report that her wedding planners had taken RM7,265 in payments but did not have anything to show for it.
The victim reported that she was conned by a father and son duo through bogus wedding packages.
Kuala Lumpur Commercial Crime Investigation Department chief Asst Comm Mohd Mahidisham Ishak said that police made the arrests after following up on a report lodged on Jan 3.
The victim, a 24-year-old female clerk, had made the booking for her big day the year before.
“She had been offered a wedding package in May 2021 that offered services such as hall rental, wedding clothes and photographers. A deposit of RM7,265 was paid but nothing came out of it.
“A raid was conducted on Saturday after we followed up on information gathered. Two men, aged 57 and 25, were arrested within the Klang Valley,” he said in a statement.
Investigations showed that more victims could be linked to the scam. The police are urging victims to lodge reports.
The suspects were believed to have run a registered wedding planner service but police investigations showed that the business had not been in operation since last year.
“We advise businesses to not simply offer services and sell products if they are unable to deliver. Do not use the on-going pandemic as an excuse to not deliver on your promises to your customers,” ACP Mohd Mahidisham said.
