'Beyond sick' Mark Francois erupts after protesters build gallows days after Amess murder

Speaking to GB News on Thursday the MP for Rayleigh and Wickford, who described the late sir David Amess as his best friend in politics, slammed the action as totally unacceptable as he also pointed to other protests that have taken place mere days after Sir David Amess' killing at his constituency surgery on October 15.

Mr Francois explained how the first of which took place outside the memorial service to Sir David where a large group of protesters were “banging drums and honking horns” as MP's reflected on the 69-year-old's life.

He went on to say: “And then yesterday a group of protesters were arrested by police in parliament square under the public order act for erecting gallows."

Mr Francois insisted that while he believes "passionately" in free speech, the decision of protesters to launch such a protest was totally wrong.

He slammed: "In terms of taste and decency - to erect a mock gallows in parliament square a few days after an MP is beyond sick."

Mr Francois went on to explain: “The reason I mention that is to try and give your viewers some idea of what it is like to be a Member of Parliament.

"And on top of all that, you get endless online abuse.”

It comes as the Metropolitan Police arrested those at the scene, where Piers Corbyn, the conspiracy theorist brother of Jeremy, was also spotted joining the protest. The Met have pledged to make "further enquiries" into the protestors behind the gallows.

Mr Francois’ comments come following his attempts to enact ‘David’s Law’ which will crack down on online abuse, beef up the Online Harms bill and ban anonymity of social media profiles, which he argues will play a role in reducing social-media inspired violence towards MP's.

It comes as Ali Harbi Ali, 25, from London, has been charged with the murder of Sir David Amess. He was also charge with preparing acts of terrorism, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) said.

Ali Harbi Ali remains in custody and is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday afternoon.

Sir David, who represented Southend West in Essex, was stabbed to death last Friday as he was meeting his constituents at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea.

His death has sparked a debate on the safety of MPs in public life, and whether they should be provided with police protection during surgeries, with arguments for metal detectors and pat downs before members of the public see their MP having been put forward.
